Distance Training: Week of March 10, 2025

I. News & Announcements

This was a banner week for the Northridge distance crew. Well done on the workouts and the racing! Everyone’s healthy again, and even though you’ve already done some great stuff, we’re set up to do even more. Let’s get after it!

A. Snow Canyon Invitational

I am still giddy with the performances you all turned in at Snow Canyon this past weekend. We had some great results, but even more importantly, you all showed me you’re confident and ready to compete this year. I know that you’re fit. From now on out, the goal is to maintain that fitness (maybe increase a little bit) and get you sharp and ready to race!

To highlight some of the great races we saw at Snow Canyon:

  • Jeffrey Hazard (4:19.05, 1600M). Jeffrey ran a big PR, a state qualifying time in his first outdoor race of the season, and came within a fraction of a second of the school record, which has stood for 31 years. All against really top-notch competition.
  • Jeffrey Hazard (9:33.81, 3200M). Jeffrey ran a 6 second PR, the second all-time mark at Northridge, and came within a second of another state qualifier in his first meet.
  • Aaron Eskelson (4:27.13, 1600M). Aaron ran a massive PR and the 8th fastest 1600M all-time at Northridge in his first outdoor race and only his second race since NXR in the fall.
  • Aaron Eskelson (9:39.78, 3200M). Aaron ran a more than 10 second PR and the 5th fastest 3200M all-time at Northridge.
  • Nate Eskelson (9:47.82, 3200M). Nate came within a fraction of a second of his PR in the 3200M after having been injured most of the winter and only starting running regularly a little over 2 weeks ago. Nate got in some great races that will be invaluable in his future competitions, where he’s going to do great things.
  • Lily Griffith (11:48.83, 3200M). Lily ran an almost 17 second PR, beating the prior school record to run the second-fastest all-time 3200M at Northridge. Lily has taken about 50 seconds off her prior PR in the 3200M this season alone, and there is more to come!
  • Evelyn Cook (11:09.29, 3200M). Evelyn obliterated the prior Northridge all-time mark in the 3200M by almost 50 seconds in her FIRST EVER 3200M race. She also qualified for state in her first race. An incredible performance!

You can see why I’m over the moon about how well each athlete did this past weekend. This is just the beginning, and I think we’re going to see great things as these runners take Northridge distance running to places it’s never been before.

B. Here are some photos from the races this past weekend.

C. Monday Practice

Even though there is no school on Monday, we will still have practice at the normal time and place for those who can make it. If you can’t make it, please message me on Remind, so that we can make arrangements for you to either do the workout on your own, or adjust the workout to Tuesday. I’d prefer to keep it on Monday, if ay all possible.

D. Thursday Meet (v. Box Elder @ Clearfield)

Most of you will not be running this meet. Lily G will running an 800M time trial (in preparation for a possible 4x800M team this year), and Carson F will be running a 1600M to get a fitness benchmark since he was unable to make it down to Snow Canyon. Lily and Carson, you will have a workout after your races…check the training for details. Everyone else will do a standard workout on Thursday. Let’s talk about possibly doing this earlier than normal for those who can make it, as I will be at the track meet later on.

E. Uniforms

If you were given a uniform and got one of the odd-style white uniforms, please come and talk to me during practice on Monday, and we can arrange for you to get another uniform. I bought new white Nike uniforms, and we have plenty available.

II. Weekly Training

As was the case this past week (and likely will be the case many of the weeks during the season, due to differential race schedules), we have different tracks of training. Aaron, Nate, Jeffrey, Michael, and Mason will complete the “No Race” training, while Lily G and Carson F will complete the “Thursday Race” version of the training. Everyone has the same Monday workout, but the training will be different on Wednesday and Thursday of the week. I’ll explain more in this week’s video message.
