Distance Training: Week of March 17, 2025

I’m sorry this is coming out late. Between work, tax deadlines, and illness, it’s been a little bit of a rough week. But on we go!

Another very solid week of training and racing from our group! We are now in the thick of competition season, so it is going to be more difficult to get all our training in with races every week. We are also going to have to be more careful about managing our effort and recovery so that we don’t end up overdoing things. It’s a tricky balance, but together we’ll do our best!

I. News & Announcements

A. Box Elder Tri-Meet Results

We had three runners compete at the trio-meet with Box Elder and Bonneville this past week: Lily G and Evelyn Cook each ran an 800M (and Evelyn also ran a leg of a 4x400M relay), while Carson ran a 1600M. All did great. Evelyn ran a 2:30.71 while Lily G ran a 2:32.62. I don’t know whether this is was a PR for Evelyn in the 800M, but it was a very solid time, especially for early in the year. It was a three second PR for Lily G, who just continues to stack them up, race after race. Carson ran another PR in the 1600M, and continues to knock on the door of a sub-5 minute mile. We determined with some different pacing, he is probably already there. We’ll see it very soon, I have no doubt.

B. Very Solid Friday Workout

The boys in our training group didn’t race this past week, but they did get in a very solid workout on Friday (moved from Thursday due to weather). The workout was 3 sets of 3×300 meters, with 60 seconds in between reps and 5 minutes in between sets. The first 300M of each set was run at 3200M pace, the second at 800M pace, and the third at 1600M pace. The goal was to hammer that second rep and then make sure they held pace on the third. It went well. I think they are ready to race!

C. Farmington Super Meet

Speaking of racing, everyone is set to race at Farmington this week. Lily G and Evelyn will be racing on Wednesday. Lily G will be running a 1600M (and maybe another race, TBD on Monday), while Evelyn will be running an 800M and a 1600M. Nate, Aaron, and Jeffrey will be running an 800M and a 3200M on Thursday. Carson will be running a 1600M on Thursday (and maybe another race, TBD on Monday).

Come to the meet prepared to carefully manage your recovery in between races, as most of you will be racing twice during the day. Doubling is important practice for the competition meets at the end of the year, so let’s start learning how to deal with these repeated harder efforts.

D. Weather and Other Spring Sports Challenges to the Schedule

We are in true outdoor track season now, where the weather alternates between, “It’s so hot outside!” to “I can’t feel my hands!” from day-to-day. Come prepared for all different types of weather when we race and train, and be prepared to be flexible with the schedule, if for weather reasons (or the need to share facilities with other spring sports) we’re unable to get the planned training in. We may move to alternate locations or switch workout/easy days.

E. Davis Districts

Our next meet (after Farmington this week) will be the Davis District meet on Tuesday and Wednesday of next week (March 25-26, 2025). We’ll discuss what you want to run at that meet during practice this week. The focus right now is getting state qualifying times and a diversity of efforts before we start really focusing in on everyone’s key races. So, I’m open to people running different distances and events, whether just for fun or a different stimulus. We’ll talk more during the week.

II. Weekly Training

Again, we have two tracks of training this week — one for ladies (who will be racing on Wednesday) and one for the guys (who will be racing on Thursday). Aside from differences dictated by that race schedule, they are largely the same. For Michael (and perhaps Mason), let’s consider you running a time trial if you don’t race. We can discuss at practice today (Monday). Again, Evelyn’s training is provided by the Tuellers. You can find the schedules here:
